PERU — Selectmen learned Monday night that construction on the boat launch on East Shore Road is scheduled to begin on July 5, according to the secretary’s meeting notes.

The Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will use federal funds to maintain the site, Leon Bucher, of the DIF&W, said.

Bucher said he had been contacted by Selectmen Kathy Hussey and answered several concerns about maintenance of the site and the Porta Potty.

He said that DIF&W used federal funds to purchase the property. He said the department has 126 sites to maintain and rely on local volunteers for maintenance and contractors for mowing. Bucher said volunteer time can be counted as “in-kind” services. DIF&W will be responsible for maintenance.

In 2002, the town signed an agreement with DIF&W indicating its interest and support of the project.

The location of the Porta Potty was moved up by the road to keep it away from neighboring properties. It will be on site for three to five months and the supplying contractor will do weekly pumping and maintenance.

The boat launch was shortened by 17 feet from the original plan so the vehicles launching boats will not be in the water. There will also be no swimming around the launch site for safety reasons.

Hussey said she hopes that any trash taken in will be taken out. There will be no trash can on site.

The cemetery bids were opened and the mowing bid went to low bidders Tim and Karen Holland for $5,000. Todd Piper was the only other bidder for $6,300.

The administrative assistant title change from secretary to the selectman was discussed again. Selectman Ed Ferland motioned to put an article on the warrant for the title change. The motion failed for lack of a second. Milligan said she hoped the issue could be resolved without going to the warrant.

Town Clerk Vera Parent had prepared two versions of the warrant, one with the administrative assistant article and one without. Parent suggested that no warrant be signed until the board can agree on what to do.
