Drivers, stop being good Samaritans. It happened again today. It happens on many roads in many towns but today it happened heading down Court Street, almost in front of Denny’s. A car was stopped on the inside lane and I was coming down in the outside lane. I didn’t know why the car was stopped, I had no reason to stop but I saw something in the corner of my eye — someone walking in front of that stopped car.

Because someone stopped to be a good Samaritan and let someone walk across the street, I needed to apply my brakes quickly (I was not even going fast, 15-20 mph) which, in turn, made the car behind me stop inches from colliding with my bumper.

Someone could get hurt or killed that way. It happened years ago on Center Street and it can happen again.

My plea to drivers is, please, do not stop in the middle of the road to let someone cross the street. They should be at a crosswalk. If they are not, they need to get to one or wait until traffic clears.

It is too dangerous to stop; drivers of cars in other lanes do not know why car(s) have stopped. Allowing someone to walk across the road puts that person at risk of being hit.

There are many ways to be a good Samaritan, but that is not one of them.
