BUCKFIELD — Police are investigating the shooting death of a 51-year-old Buckfield man found dead in his home Wednesday night.

According to police, the body of Gregg Belanger was found when Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies went to his home on Darnit Road after his ex-wife, Denise Belanger, 41, called 911 at about 8:30 p.m.

Detectives were at the ranch-style home most of the day Thursday. They were taking photographs and measurements at the house as their investigation continued.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office was performing an autopsy.

Police did not say what type of weapon was recovered from the home or where it was found in relation to Belanger’s body.

Belanger was a welder at Bath Iron Works, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

According to court records, the couple married on New Year’s Even 1989. They lived for a time in Poland before moving to the house in Buckfield. They divorced in 2010, sharing custody of one child.

Court records also reveal that Belanger had a minor criminal history, including convictions for assault in 2009 and for criminal mischief a year later.

Darnit Road connects to Tucker Road on one end, River and North Buckfield roads on the other.
