SABATTUS — With her family by her side, Irene L. Grondin, 55, passed on Tuesday morning at Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 22, 1955, Irene grew up in Lewiston and spent the last 28 years living at her home in Sabattus.

A graduate of Lewiston High School, Irene went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Southern Maine. She was employed at Coastal Enterprises Inc., commuting to locations in Wiscasset and Portland for the past 19 years, where she developed strong friendships with many of her coworkers.

Known as “Rene” to her family, she was a very kind, compassionate and energetic woman who loved spending time outdoors in the garden, reading on her porch, searching for new restaurants and attending shows at local playhouses with her husband of 34 years, and, most of all, spending time with her wonderful family.

Irene especially liked walking the beaches by the ocean in search of sea glass. Over the years she amassed quite a sea glass collection, which she treasured and shared with everyone by displaying throughout the house and gardens. She also owned an assortment of sea glass earrings in order to share her passion everywhere she went.

Irene is survived by her husband, Guy Grondin of Sabattus; their daughter, Colette Levesque and her husband, Keith Levesque, of Greene; and their son Trevor Grondin and his fiancee, Angela Cloutier, of Sabattus. She is also survived by her parents, Edward and Therese Hurley of Lewiston; her brothers, Daniel Hurley of Standish and Kenneth Hurley of Auburn; her sister, Gail Peck and her husband, Jonathan, of Pembroke, Mass.; her brother-in-law Larry Grondin and his wife, Brenda, of Sabattus, her sisters-in-law, Nicole Grondin and her husband, Dennis Delehanty, of Marietta, Ga., and Suzanne Gervais and her husband, John, of Scarborough; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
