Historical society

MECHANIC FALLS — Due to a prior scheduling committment, the Mechanic Falls Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at the Mechanic Falls Town Library. Steve Wheeler will address the society on his recent investigation of the town’s map of 1873.

Wheeler has recently spent time locating many of the homes from the 1873 map which still exist on the same streets today. He also retraced the paths taken by Curtis Sawyer and Charles Waterman, who chronicled the town in the late 19th century in a variety of Maine publications. In addition, Wheeler has researched the town’s cemeteries and will present his findings at the meeting.

The society hopes to expand on Wheeler’s interest and begin initiating some projects highlighting the town’s past.

French storytime

LEWISTON — Vanessa Herrmann will offer a French language storytime at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, in the Children’s Room of the Lewiston Public Library.

The library hopes to offer a French storytime every month for native speakers and families who are trying to teach their children French. Hermann will use a variety of French songs, fingerplays and books. She hopes to explore such themes as wolves, alphabet, Africa, Quebec and food.

Rainbow Girls

NEW GLOUCESTER — Lewiston Assembly #14 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls will hold a yard sale and take-home bean supper from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at the Masonic Hall, Route 100. The event is rain or shine.

The group is currently raising funds to send approximately 20 girls to the 62nd annual Grand Assembly sessions to be held in Bangor. The cost is $90 per girl.

The take-home supper menu includes homemade beans, homemade coleslaw, hot dogs and homemade desserts.

Yard, bake sale

MONMOUTH — The East Monmouth Church Ladies Auxilary will hold their annual indoor yard and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at the Church Vestry, Route 135, East Monmouth. 

Sale features jewelry, household items and furniture, books, electronics, vintage items, children’s toys and many unique items.

Home-baked goods, lobster rolls, fish chowder and hot dogs will be available.

Duplicate bridge

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on April 19 at the Multi-Purpose Center.

Winners in Flight A were: 1st, Patricia Garcia and David Lock; 2nd, Claire Lyons and Luke Merry; 3rd, Jeanine Kivus and Kathleen Burden; 4th, Sharon Hinckley and Rosemaire Goodwin. Winners in Flight B were Helen Little and Judy Abromson. Another game will be played at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at the center.

The club also met on April 20 at Schooner Estates in Auburn.

Winners were: 1st, Jeanine Kivus and Rosemarie Goodwin; 2nd, Mike and Patricia Quinn; 3rd, Anna Vitiello and Lucille Bilodeau. Social bridge

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on April 25 were as follows:

1st: Jan Arey and Linda Leotsakos; 2nd: Paul Sherman and Les Buzzell; 3rd: Hazel Glazier and Marta Clements.

1st/2nd tie in B: Lue Bilodeau and Alberta Turner with Ellie and Lindy Wigton.

Cribbage results

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on April 21 were as follows.

First: Muriel Webber and Gene Brown; second: Louise Carey and Bert Belanger; third: Steve Agurkis and Don Maillette; fourth: Monique Nadeau and Pat Berube; fifth: Val Asselin and Roland Bosse.
