RAYMOND – Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department officers are searching for a loaded police firearm, stolen from a sheriff deputy’s home some time during the day Thursday.

At some time between 7 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., someone broke into the Cape Road home of a county sheriff’s deputy and took a small portable firearms safe, including the officer’s department-issued .40-caliber Glock pistol and loaded pistol magazines.

Also taken were a number of police badges, including badges marked Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office “deputy,” “detective,” and “sergeant.” A badge marked “Maine Drug Enforcement” was also stolen.

According to a press release issued by county Capt. Jeff Davis, “As you can imagine, we are deeply concerned as this involves a loaded weapon,” he said, appealing to the public for help.

In addition to the police weapon and badges, a collection of women’s jewelry was taken.

As police were investigating the theft, a nearby resident reported that a suspicious vehicle had pulled into her driveway during the day Thursday and an older woman knocked on her door. When the woman realized someone was home, she quickly left and got into a vehicle “similar in design to a gray-colored Mercury Marquis.”

According to police, the vehicle had a lighter colored roof and possibly chrome-spoke wheels. The witness said there may have been several adult men in the vehicle.

According to Davis, the department has seen a spike in the number of daytime burglaries in the Raymond, Casco and Naples areas. He asked that any suspicious activity be reported to the sheriff’s office or Maine State Police.

Anyone with information on this case, or anyone who has had a similar encounter as described above, is asked to call the sheriff’s office detective division, 774-1444, ext. 2173.
