AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A former Maine police officer has been cleared by a jury of a charge he bought a gun for his father, a convicted felon who is prohibited from owning a firearm.

Twenty-six-year-old Clint Childs of East Winthrop was indicted by a grand jury in

February on a charge of conspiracy to commit possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and one count of aggravated forgery.

Childs had worked as a police officer in Monmouth.

Childs was acquitted following a one-day trial Thursday in Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta.

Childs’ father, Maurice Childs, was convicted of a felony charge of aggravated assault in 1975.

The Kennebec Journal says Maurice Childs pleaded guilty in January to illegal possession of a firearm and he was fined $1,500.
