MEXICO — The Mexico Police Department handled 61 calls since April 26. Among them were:

Thefts

*  Two men were summoned in connection with a the theft of a Purple Heart license plate honoring its owner as being wounded in military service at 7:41 p.m. April 30. Roy Richeson, 36, of Rumford, was charged with theft by unauthorized taking. David Palmer, 48, of Mexico, was charged with illegal attachment of plates. Both are scheduled to appear in Rumford District Court on Aug. 2.

* A Sun Valley Circle resident reported at 1:56 p.m. April 30 that someone stole a pink baby stroller, valued at $200. Police have a suspect.

* A Granite Street resident reported at 1:21 p.m. May 1 that someone had stolen a pool slide from the lawn of his home. The owner tracked down the two men who had taken it and brought it back. Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said similar incidents occur each year when the town begins its annual cleanup program. Items taken are sometimes thought to have been put out for pickup, he said, and that was the case with the pool slide.

Burglary

* A Whitman Street resident reported at 11:09 p.m. April 30 that someone kicked in his front door in an attempt to enter his home, causing about $100 damage.

Animal sighting

* A Highland Terrace resident reported at 6:09 p.m. May 3 that a young moose, believed to be covered with afterbirth, was running down the street. A search by police did not locate the animal.

Trail closures

* Three people have complained in the past few days of all-terrain vehicles being used on closed trails. Sgt. Hodsdon said trails are too soft for use, and likely won’t be open before May 15. He requests that ATV users call the Police Department or their local ATV club to learn when trails may be used.

Seat belt grant

* The Police Department received a $1,600 seat-belt grant from the Bureau of Highway Safety to pay for additional patrols from May 23 to June 5.
