SOUTH PORTLAND — Republicans are filling mailboxes in Senate District 7 with fliers attacking the Democratic candidate as a member of a liberal establishment responsible for Maine’s tax burden and job losses, while Democrats fire back with attacks on the GOP candidate’s personal finances.
Maine Public Broadcasting Network says Republican Louis Maietta Jr. is facing tax liens from his hometown of South Portland on three properties for failing to pay property taxes. Democratic Chairman Ben Grant says Maietta needs to get his financial house in order before going to Augusta.
Maietta is facing Democrat Cynthia Dill of Cape Elizabeth, who made headlines this year for sponsoring a bill to allow citizen recalls of elected officials.
They’re vying in Tuesday’s special election for the Senate seat vacated by Sen. Larry Bliss of South Portland.
