LIVERMORE FALLS — Regional School Unit 73 directors voted Monday unanimously to have the current superintendents continue interim duties until July 1 or the appointment of a superintendent for the new school district, board Chairwoman Denise Rodzen said Tuesday.

The vote followed a 90-minute executive session, and two failed votes on who would be the superintendent of the new district and who would be the assistant superintendent.

The first motion was made by Mary Redmond-Luce of Jay, and seconded by Jackie Knight of Livermore Falls, to nominate Jay Superintendent Bob Wall as the superintendent and RSU 36 Superintendent Sue Pratt to be the assistant superintendent.

The two are currently serving as co-secretaries of the RSU 73 school board.

Redmond-Luce’s motion failed in a 6-6 vote, Rodzen said.

New Director Vicki McLeod of Jay, who would have been the tie-breaker, was absent.

Voting in favor of Wall were Darcie Comstock of Jay, Knight, Diane Gould of Livermore, Redmond-Luce, Tim Madden of Livermore and Rodzen of Livermore Falls. Opposing the motion were Dan DiPompo of Jay, Ann Souther of Livermore Falls, Tammy Castonguay Frost of Livermore Falls, Tammy Dwinal-Shufelt of Jay and Mike Morrell of Jay, Rodzen said.

The second motion by Cindy Young of Livermore and Dwinal-Shufelt to have Pratt serve as superintendent and Wall as assistant superintendent failed 6-6 as well, Rodzen said.

In favor of Pratt were DiPompo, Souther, Frost, Dwinal-Shufelt and Morrell, Rodzen said.

Opposed were Comstock, Knight, Gould, Redmond-Luce, Madden and Rodzen, she said.

Both superintendents have contracts with their current school systems through June 30, 2012.

More discussion on the leadership team will be held at future meetings.

In a related matter, directors also tabled action on the makeup of the positions of the central office staff, Rodzen said. The board needs more information before a decision is made, she said.

Administrators have proposed that there be a superintendent, an assistant superintendent and one administrative assistant for each superintendent.

The proposal also calls for positions of a business manager, payroll clerk and accounts payable clerk. The special services would include a director, and assistant director and one administrative assistant for each of those positions.

The board set up several budget meetings to review a proposed $18.28 million 2011-12 budget for the consolidated system. There are also additional requests that may add more money to the spending package.

The first budget meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Livermore Falls High School cafeteria. It will follow a RSU 36 school board meeting that starts at 6 p.m.

Other meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. both Tuesday, May 17, and Wednesday, May 18. The place for the meetings will be decided on Thursday due to a conflict with the use of high school cafeteria on May 17.
