BANGOR, Maine — An Ellsworth woman was arrested Saturday for allegedly dousing an elderly female with an accelerant and setting her on fire at 1601 Broadway on Friday afternoon, according to Bangor police.

Emily A. Cole, 26, of Ellsworth, was charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder, Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a press release issued about 6 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, who suffered severe burns on her upper body, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, but later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Tim York of the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office said Saturday prior to Cole’s arrest.

The woman was listed in serious condition Sunday morning at the Portland hospital.

York declined to discuss the case further and referred questions to Bangor police. The extent of the fire damage also was not revealed.

Cole, who appears to be related to the victim, remained Sunday at the Penobscot County Jail. Bail most likely will be set at 1 p.m. Monday when she is scheduled to make her first appearance before a judge at the Penobscot Judicial Center via video conference from the jail.

Further information will not be released until after Cole’s court appearance, Edwards said in the press release.

The residents of the home at 1601 Broadway are David A. Cole, 80, and Ernestine Cole, 78, according to the 2011 Cross and Search Reverse Phone Directory and www.intelius.com, an Internet database that searches public documents for a fee.
