AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine Senate is expected to vote on a bill to overhaul Maine’s health insurance laws, after a weekend “cooling off” period between majority Republicans who support the bill and Democrats who say it’s being rushed through.
A Senate enactment vote is scheduled for Monday. After the House voted on Thursday along party lines to approve the bill, a partisan fight broke out over whether its costs should get further scrutiny.
Senate leaders decided to set the bill aside without a vote early Friday and take up the matter on Monday.
The bill’s designed to encourage more choice and competition to hold down health insurance costs in Maine. It includes subsidies for the chronically ill and those with pre-existing conditions, funded by a tax on premiums.
