BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Maine university students on average would pay 4.3 percent higher tuition rates the coming school year under a proposal being considered by University of Maine System trustees.

The Board of Trustees is voting Monday on the system’s 2011-2012 operating budget. The budget includes the proposed tuition increase, which is a weighted average of rates at all seven universities.

Chancellor Richard Pattenaude says the tuition increase is the lowest in-state increase since 2002, when tuition went up 4.2 percent on average.

Pattenaude said trustees directed the university system to minimize tuition increases as much as possible in these challenging economic times.
