DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was wondering if any of your readers have noticed that Gifford’s does not have hardly any of their flavors of ice cream in the stores. Most of them have vanilla and chocolate. You never see grapenut or maple walnut. Grapenut is one of the more popular flavors. — No Name, Strong

ANSWER: Your love for grapenut notwithstanding, Sun Spots would be willing to bet a day’s pay that vanilla and chocolate sell in larger quantities. Since grocery stores have limited space, they have to pick and choose what brands and flavors they carry.

You will have better luck at larger stores, obviously. You could also ask the manager at your regular store to order your favorites. They may be able to accommodate you if you order in large enough quantities. (Fill up that freezer!)

Another option is to buy from a “scoop shop.” Sun Spots called the Gifford’s headquarters and was told that there are three restaurants that sell scoops: Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli and Roy’s Allsteak Hamburgers and Cindy’s Dockside in Poland. Finally, if you want to be sure of all the flavors being available, there is a Gifford’s store at 910 Minot Ave., Auburn.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Our students at Oxford Hills Middle School are in need of a drum set in order to do the auditions and final performances of their rock ‘n’ roll research project. We are looking for a drum set that is no longer needed, stuck in someone’s basement, or in need of revitalization. It does not need to be in tune, as most of the students will be syncing their playing with the background music of the original band they researched.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was so touched to see my name in Sun Spots (May 11 query about Affordable Eyes). My mother has always told me that I am famous, just goes to show.

Karen, thank you for caring. I had surgery last October. I was diagnosed with a chronic disease, and I got every reaction possible to the prescribed steroids. The doctor suggested the possibility of closing. I then went to the accountant, who said the same thing.
