WALES — Lewis M. Smith, 70, of Route 126, Gardiner Road, passed over peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 23, at his home after a two-year courageous battle with stage-four lung cancer.

He was born in Monmouth on Nov. 23, 1940, the son of Benjamin and Leola Curtis Smith, the youngest of eight children. He was educated at North Monmouth School. On Oct. 5, 1963, he married his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Ann Sellinger of Wales.

In his younger years he restored cars, several of them were antiques. He was a perfectionist at his work and well-known for this. Later on in life he became a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 716 and worked throughout Maine and other states. His hobby was farm life. He and his wife brought up their two sons to appreciate country living. Both sons, to his delight, live next door to his home. Louie was also “Mr. Fix It.” If anything needed fixing he could do it. His favorite toys were his tractors.

The loves of his life were his grandchildren. He was their “PaPa” and “Grampa.” No words can express his love for them and he will be in their hearts forever.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Dorothy Smith, of Wales; his loving sons, Adam and wife, Tina and Brian and his significant other, Melissa, all of Wales; his precious grandchildren, Gage and Emma; his step-granddaughter, Krystle Coleman; step-great granddaughters, Christina and Kylie; his brother, Wilbur, and wife, Dolores, of Leeds; sisters, Irene Bowden, of Hallowell, Ida Crocker, of Fayette,Pauline Bragdon, of Leeds, Ruth Travers, of Litchfield and Nellie Mae Rolfe and husband, Raymond, of Farmingdale; and many, many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Harry; half-brother, Clint Smith; half-sister, Helen Ridlon; sisters-in-laws, Doreen and Dorothy; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Bowden and George Ridlon; and best friend and brother-in-law, Carroll Travers.

The family would like to give special thanks to his brother, Wilbur, and wife, Dolores, and to his sister, Ruth, for their continuous visits and help during this difficult time. His family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to all the staff at Oncology 4 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, and Dr. Mahesh Pandey; to all who helped in Radiology at CMMC and to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for making the final days comfortable and finally, thank you to all who sent their prayers his way.
