A general alarm, to which all the available apparatus in the two cities responded, destroyed the old Pingree Mill on Avon Street on Sunday and 75,000 feet of lumber in the vicinity. The loss will reach $12,000 and is only partially covered by insurance. Two firemen were overcome and there were many minor injuries. Nearly 7,000 feet of hose were used, and only the direction of the wind saved a greater property loss.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston area union carpenters receive a five-cent hourly pay increase tomorrow.

A two-year contract negotiated by Local 407, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of America, and the Lewiston-Auburn Contractors Association last year calls for a five-cent hike, boosting base pay to $2.85 an hour.

The contract also provides for a five-cent raise in December. Expiration date of the contract is May 31, 1962.

25 years ago, 1986

State environmental officials have recommended that vendors bidding on the reconstruction of Auburn’s energy-recovery facility base their figures on air-emission control equipment that would reduce the particulate level to that of new facilities planned for Biddeford, Orrington and Portland.

The recommendation came at a meeting between members of the Department of Environmental Protection’s air-quality bureau and John Haydon and Davis Watson, Massachusetts consultants working with the area solid waste advisory committee.
