LIVERMORE FALLS — A pit bull that bit a 5-year-old girl on the face in May has been euthanized, owner Heather Pike said Wednesday.

Animal Control Officer Wayne Atwood confirmed the euthanization on Tuesday.

Pike said she took her 1-year-old dog, Skidder, to a veterinarian to have him euthanized and cremated on May 24. The dog was released from state-ordered quarantine on May 23 and a decision had to be made.

Her landlord at the mobile home park at Pine Ridge Loop told her that her family would be evicted if the dog continued to stay due with them, Pike said.

She couldn’t find anyone to take Skidder, she said.

“It was horrible. It was like losing one of my children. I didn’t think it would go that far,” she said. “I was devastated.”

The dog was tied up on a run when he bit the child, Pike said previously.

When Skidder was a 4-month-old puppy he also nipped at another child, she said.

Atwood had issued Pike a summons on a civil violation of being a keeper of a dangerous dog after the May incident.

Atwood said Tuesday he was told that the state still plans to prosecute on the violation, even though the dog was put down. She is scheduled to appear Tuesday, June 15, at Lewiston District Court, he said.
