This is in reference to the story about the rock on Howard Pond Road in Hanover (May 20). The rock is on town property and the LaForests are forcing the town to get a lawyer. They had agreed to the rock remaining in place in order to get their building permit, and then started whining about it after their home was built.

It has been stated that the rock is a huge safety hazard on this road. What about the rest of the road? The road is one lane in many places with blind driveways and zero-visibility corners. If the town were to spend money on improvements, the rock would not even be on the list.

The article also stated that the LaForests had to abide by a 250-foot setback from the pond so they had no choice but to build right next to the rock. I believe the setback is only 100 feet. They could easily, with a little thought and common sense, have used the rock and placement of their septic system to move the home away from the rock and closer to the water. That would have required a variance, usually granted due to small lot size.

My understanding is that if you want something changed after you are issued your permit, you must request an amendment to your permit before you begin building.

My problem with the situation is the money the town will now be forced to spend on a lawyer, as the LaForests have obtained one.
