GRAY — Maggie Chaplin pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out seven Thursday, spinning Gray-New Gloucester to a 12-0 win over York in a WMC regular-season softball finale.
Alex Thompson’s single and Rachel Edson’s double provided the punch in a four-run first inning for the Patriots. G-NG padded its lead to 5-0 on an Edson single in the second and added three runs in the third, highlighted by another Thompson single and a Sandy Ricardi bunt.
G-NG also took advantage of 13 walks in the five-inning victory. Ivy Sheehan had two singles to lead York. Sheehan took the loss on the mound.
Baseball
GRAY — Gray-New Gloucester scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday, and the Patriots cemented a Western Class B playoff berth with a 7-4 victory over York.
Tim Lerette started the rally with a sharp single. Ben Verrill walked, and Jeff Taylor loaded the bases with a single up the middle.
Kevin Cavallaro plated the tying run with his second hit of the gane. Aaron Boulos followed with a two-run single for the Patriots (10-6). Ryan Cavallaro provided additional insurance with his second hit and second RBI of the contest.
Undefeated ace Kyle Nielsen picked up his seventh win of the year, working six strong innings, scattering eight hits, striking out five and walking one. Ryan Cavallaro pitched the seventh for his fourth save.
York (8-8) scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Jack Radke’s RBI single gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead in the fifth before the Patriots answered.
Tennis
Devils split in KVACs
The Lewiston boys and Brunswick girls won the KVAC tennis championships Thursday.
Lewiston defeated Hampden, 4-1, at home in the boys’ match, while Brunswick also held serve on its home court with a 3-2 triumph over Lewiston.
Eric Hall and Scott Gagne picked up straight-sets singles wins for the Devils. Ben and Alex Chicoine and Jake Berube and Brett Vallee also cruised to victory in doubles.
Abby Blaisdell and Becca Lessard each won in singles for the Lewiston girls. Brunswick’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Laura Pavitt and Sara Freshley edged Paige LeBlond and Courtney Aldrich in three sets, including a second-set tiebreaker, to clinch the title for the Dragons.
