RUMFORD — The Falcons Summer Hoop Camp will run from June 20 to July 1 at Mountain Valley High School for students in grades 2 through 8.
The camp is open to any area youngsters that have the desire to learn more about the great game of basketball, regardless of previous experience. The goal of camp is to fulfill the individual expectation of the participants, whether it is playing in the championship game at Cumberland County Civic Center or engaging in healthy exercise and friendly competition.
Camp will be broken up into grade levels, and different aspects of the game will be taught at the different levels. Grades 2-3 will attend from 8 to 9 a.m.; Grades 4-5 will attend from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; and grades 6-8 will attend from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The camp’s philosophy is to give campers a better understanding of the game. We hope that every camper can look back on their experience and say that they are a better basketball player than when they started.
A special feature at this year’s camp is the addition of Dr. Dish, a basketball training tool that helps athletes reach their maximum potential through maximum repetition. Campers will have access to the most modern technology on the market today. Campers will get a chance to train like the pros with this new addition.
Registrations will be taken up to and on the first day of the camp. Pre-registration forms will be sent home with all students in the former SAD 43 school system. If you plan on signing up on the day of the camp, please show up 30 minutes early. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Rick White at 357-1313.

Hoop club seeks donations
LEWISTON — The Lewiston Area Basketball Club is a non-profit organization that promotes basketball in Maine by helping players develop their physical and fundamental basketball skills while fostering an environment of sportsmanship among players, coaches, parents and others involved in basketball.
Over the next several weeks, the club will be working hard at practice and fundraising for their trip to Virginia in July to compete in the national AAU tournament.
Many of our athletes are financially challenged, and we rely on fundraisers and donations to operate our program. We are seeking assistance to help pay for travel expenses. Your help in sending our team to compete at the national championship will be greatly appreciated.
Donations may be mailed to: Lewiston Area Basketball Club, P.O. Box 967, Lewiston, Maine 04243. For more information, contact Elgin Physic at 619-3898.
Dirigo tennis camp
DIXFIELD — Tennis players will have an opportunity to test their skills while having fun at the 2011 Cougar Tennis Camp to be held for two weeks in July.
This is the 14th annual Cougar Camp for boys and girls in grades four through 12. It is divided into two separate sessions at the Pierce courts. The first runs from Monday, July 18–Friday, July 22 for grades 7 to 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The atmosphere shifts the following week when grades four through six invade the courts the 25th through 29th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Dirigo and Mountain Valley elementary children and student-athletes will be joined by campers from surrounding communities. The camp will offer beginning players basic skills instruction and match play experience to practice their new skills, so they can enjoy the game of tennis. The more experienced players will receive plenty of match play and individual instruction to improve their games.
Dirigo High School tennis coach Art Chamberlin said the camp is not pressure packed, so each individual has an opportunity to go at his or her own pace. The older group tends to compete on a higher level and push themselves harder.
Cost is $65 per camper (includes a T-shirt), $55 without a shirt, and $45 for additional family members. Please mail a $10 deposit by June 20. Contact Chamberlin at 357-1057, 597-2375 or [email protected]. Mailing address is 502 Canton Point Road, Canton, Maine 04221.
