DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am writing in response to the May 24 letter regarding chair caning. I cane chairs and would appreciate you giving my information to No Name, Wilton and placing me in your Rolodex.
I offer free estimates and very reasonable pricing. References are available on request. Thank you for your help. — Pam Lanyon, Turner, 225-3174, [email protected]
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I see that a person in Wilton is looking for someone local who can cane. That would be me, Shadagee Snowshoe Relacing and so much more. I’ve been caning for seven years.
A small business needs more than one type of service to keep busy year-round, so I do both snowshoes and caning, including chairs and canoe seats. My shop is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. — Georgia Tolman, New Sharon, 578-0348, [email protected]
DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the person regarding the lack of Gifford’s ice cream flavor variety in the stores (May 23), I did read one time that a lot of the specialty ice creams are not made and/or sold during the winter months, only when the tourists start coming into Maine, usually around June 1. The most common of the flavors are made year round (chocolate, vanilla) as they sell the fastest.
You’d have to check with Gifford’s and all the smaller places that make and sell ice creams to see if this is really true. Thanks. — No Name via email
ANSWER: Sun Spots has read that as well, and the evidence of it seems apparent. Look at all the ice cream places that close for the winter, perhaps opening for Valentine’s Day or Christmas with special treats. The tourists are certainly a part of the change in flavors, but the seasons play a big role as well.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Sixth Street Congregational Church (109 Sixth St., Auburn) will have its annual yard and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Plants will also be available.
The sale is held in the vestry, so weather is never a problem. There will be lots of homemade baked goods, children’s toys and something for everyone. — Peg, Auburn
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Universalist Church of Greene will be holding its annual yard sale on June 24 and 25. We would welcome your gently used donations. Proceeds go toward keeping our doors open-year round.
Our Sunday school will also be selling some items along with some baked goods and refreshments to benefit Heifer International.
To make arrangements for pickup or drop-off, please call me at 225-5181 or Pat or George at 946-5052. We would love to accept larger items, but request that you drop those items off at the church. Thank you for your support! — Heidi, Universalist Church of Greene
DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the person who is looking for a pen pan. It still might be possible to find a list of pen pals in magazines such as Cappers, Grit, Reminisce or the Good Old Days magazines. We used to purchase these magazines through the Publishers Clearing House. Libraries might also have these magazines. — No Name, No Town
