BANGOR — Edward Little surrendered five unearned runs in the first inning of Saturday’s Eastern Class A baseball semifinal and never recovered.
The cushion was more than enough for Bangor’s Curtis Worcester, who tossed a three-hitter as the second-seeded Rams crushed the sixth-seeded Red Eddies, 10-0, in a game that was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Rams (15-3) will face No. 1 Lewiston for the Eastern A championship at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Morton Field in Augusta.
Worcester struck out 10 and walked none in six innings of work. He allowed just one runner as far as second base.
EL starter Nate Blais allowed 10 runs in five-plus innings of work, but none of them were earned. EL committed five errors.
Anthony Capuano started the five-run rally with a single. After a hit batsman, Joe Stanevicz got a second life when his foul pop-up was misplayed by catcher James Jackson. Stanvicz took advantage with an RBI single that put Bangor on the board. Nic Cota followed with a two-run triple to make it 3-0.
Bangor made it 4-0 on a throwing error by shortstop Josh Delong. Christian Corneil tripled to up the lead to 5-0.
Bangor added two more runs in the fifth on a Cota double, a wild pitch, an infield error and Jack Stacey’s RBI double.
Bangor invoked the 10-run rule on Capuano’s double, an outfield error, two walks and Josiah Hartley’s two-run single.
Cota led Bangor with a triple and double. Capuano doubled and singled and Stanevicz singled twice.
John Simpson led the Red Eddies (10-8) with two hits, while Blais recorded their other hit.
