RUMFORD — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1641 celebrated Flag Day on Tuesday morning with a special ceremony at its headquarters.

In addition to honoring Old Glory, the Robert Shand VFW Post dedicated a new flagpole  donated by the VFW men’s auxiliary.

More than 40 community members and area veterans gathered for the ceremony. Master of ceremonies was Gerald Francis, VFW Post commander, assisted by Officer of the Day Alfred Richard, a veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.

“We are gathered here to dedicate our new flagpole donated by our men’s auxiliary,” Francis said, “and to confirm our commitment to the American Flag.

“It has heard the battle cry of freedom and has been the banner of democracy,” he said. “It is our sacred symbol of the heart and soul of our country and our freedom.

“It symbolizes freedom, hope, strength of spirit and the determination of the American people. So as we gather here to salute this symbol, our way of life, let’s remember the many men and women who have died for it,” Francis said.

Ronald Roy delivered chaplain’s blessings.

“O God, Bless our nation’s emblems. May they ever symbolize freedom and justice for all people,” Roy said. “Bless, too, the POW and MIA flag for it represents our missing comrades and our diligence to bring all of our veterans home.

“Help our comrades to always campaign vigorously for the principles that are noble and right for the high ideals represented by these two flags,” he said.

The flag was raised with the assistance of eight veterans and as “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played.

“This ceremony went over very well,” Francis said. “I am encouraged by today’s turnout to have the VFW honor Flag Day again next year.”
