Leavitt AP Smith honored
TURNER — Bradley R. Smith, currently Leavitt Area High School assistant principal, has been selected to receive The New England Preparatory School Athletic Council’s Distinguished Service Award.
The award is given annually to an individual who has “contributed significantly to New England Independent School Athletics and Physical Education through enthusiasm, dedication, leadership and vision.”
Smith, a resident of North Yarmouth and former director of athletics at Bridgton Academy and Hebron Academy, has been on the Council’s executive committee for more than 20 years and has served as it treasurer, vice-president, and president during that time.
The New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) was founded in 1942 as an organization of athletic directors. NEPSAC represents nearly 170 independent schools in New England. Smith was the first athletic director from Maine to serve as its President and to be honored with this award. The award will be presented at their annual meeting in the fall.
Lewiston Rec doubles tennis
LEWISTON — Lewiston Recreation announces that its summer doubles tennis league will run from June 20 to August 4.
The schedule is as follows: Mondays, Men’s C league, 5:30 p.m.; Men’s B league, 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Women’s C league, 5:30 p.m.; Women’s B league, 7 p.m. Thursdays, Women’s A league, 5:30 p.m.; Men’s A league, 7 p.m.
Fee is $50 for residents, and $65 for non-residents. Sign-ups should take plaace as soon as possible so teams and schedules are ready. This can be done on-line or in person at the Lewiston Recreation Department on Central Avenue between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Also, sign-ups are on-going for the youth programs which begin June 20th. This also may be done online or in-person.
Lewiston girls’ hoop clinic
LEWISTON — There will be a basketball skills and drills clinic at Geiger Elementary School for Lewiston girls entering grades 6 through 8. Basketball fundamentals will be stressed.
The clinic will begin on June 20 for two weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost for the clinic will be $30. Please register by calling John Hesler at 782-3948 or Alicia Pelletier at 577-5764.
A&J Open tennis
SOUTH PORTLAND — The 42nd annual A&J Open tennis tournament will be held June 24 through 26 at South Portland High School. The tournament is sanctioned as a major outdoor event of the Maine Tennis Association.
Competition will be held in men’s and women’s open singles, mixed doubles and both 35-and-over and 55-and-over men’s singles. Large and competitive fields are anticipated.

Spruce Mountain girls’ summer hoop program
JAY — Spruce Mountain High School girls’ basketball coach Gavin Kane announces summer basketball registration and practice Monday, June 20 at the former Jay Middle School for all girls going into Grades 9 through 12 next fall. Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., with practice from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Registration and practice will be open to all girls going into grades 5 through 8 next fall on Tuesday, June 21 at the middle school. Registration will be 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., with practice from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Registration fee for all players is $40.00 and will include a summer basketball jersey.
High School players will be playing in a local summer league with most varsity games on Thursday nights at the south campus (former Livermore Falls HS), and JV games at Buckfield High School on Wednesday nights. A summer schedule will be available at the first practice on Monday and Tuesday. Middle school age players will have a daytime program available to them on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. for four weeks.
