My gripe is the fake brick wall Bates college puts up on the corner of Russell and College streets. It looks like something Mr. Drysdale and Miss Jane put up to fool Jethro.

Stay classy Bates; you don’t need Uncle Jed’s money that badly do you?

If you want a nice wall on that corner, take a ride to Farmington and visit Hippach Field. Something classy like that not only would look better, it would top your letterhead.

My gripe is the use of words like “graffiti” and “tagging.” I’m concerned that such terms flatter attention-seeking vandals.

Law enforcement, reporters — our whole society — needs to accurately label these acts as vandalism and destruction of personal property, and eliminate labels that might in any way glorify or legitimize those involved in this clandestine, illegal scourge.

And penalizing property owners for not immediately eradicating the mess made by these vandals certainly can’t be the answer!

My gripe is reading time and time again people griping about who parks in handicapped spaces. How do you know the person getting out of the vehicle isn’t handicapped? Are all handicapped individuals supposed to limp? Is there also a certain age you have to be to be considered handicapped? Many people have heart and lung problems that are considered disabling. You can’t see that. Some can’t walk distances. You can’t see that either. There are many other medical diagnoses that are disabling. Shortening the walking distance in the parking lot is a help and better than nothing. Refrain from judging others. You may be in that position some day.
