AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of a bill calling for a study into the health effects of wood smoke will stand.
The Maine House voted Tuesday not to override the governor’s veto. In his veto message, LePage questioned the study’s cost and whether it would undermine the use of wood as a renewable heating resource.
Supporters said the bill, which for the study by Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is misunderstood, and is only aimed at a relatively small number of outdoor wood furnaces.
The bill is one of eight vetoes sent to lawmakers Tuesday. The Senate upheld LePage’s veto of a bill that would have directed the state finance and education departments to file monthly reports about funding for certain activities.
