LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen voted to approve the use of recreation fees from Jay and Livermore Falls to support the summer program, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said Tuesday.

Town voters raised $12,000 and Jay voters raised $12,000 in June to fund the six-week program. Jay also raised $4,000 to bus children from its town to the Livermore Falls High School where the joint program is held.

Last year, there were too many counselors and the budget was trimmed back for this year, Flagg said.

Normally 200 kids sign up but this year, it is close to 260 kids and three more counselors are needed, she said.

The program started June 20 and will run through July 29.

Flagg estimated the fees to be used would be between $8,000 and $10,000 and it will still leave start-up costs for next year.

“We’re trying to get a handle on how many kids will participate,” Flagg said.

Livermore Falls and Jay residents pay $30 for the first child, and $10 for each additional child to participate in the program. Students are provided breakfast and lunch.

Livermore residents pay $60 for the first child and $30 for each additional child. Residents from other towns pay $100 per child, she said.

In 2009, residents in Jay raised $20,000 for its own program and Livermore Falls raised $26,850, according to town records. The program serves children entering first grade through eighth grade.

In other business, selectmen accepted with regret the resignation of Nels Hawkins from the Livermore Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant, Flagg said.

The board also appointed Jackie Knight to a three-year term on the Budget Committee.

The board did not re-appoint Chairman Scott Roberts whose term was up, Flagg said.
