TEMPLE — Koviashuvik Local Living School has announced the following classes for July. All classes held at Koviashuvik in Temple. Local/organic lunch is provided for full-day classes.

An open house will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9. There will be a tour of the school and a chance to take part in seasonal folk skills. The tour includes a stone root cellar, earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, solar dehydrator, solar hot water system, alternative cooking technologies, composting toilet, log cabin, vegetable gardens, berry patches, fruit and nut orchard, human powered grindstone, grainmill and acorn sheller, and perennial/wild plantings. Free of charge.

Deerskins into Leather will be presented from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10. Learn, through doing, about all the steps and stages that transform a raw hide into soft, fuzzy, smoked buckskin. Cost: $55.

Packbasket Weekend will be presented from 9 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 23 and 24. A brown ash packbasket will carry your load for many years. During this weekend participants will weave a full-sized basket as well as learn how to pound ash to prepare basket materials in the future. Participants leave with their own packbasket. Cost: $245.

Tour de Fruit Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31. Come to either or both days. Saturday will feature crafting a brown ash bicycle basket from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  By the end of the day everyone will create one beautiful basket that can be attached to any saddlebag rack.  Material for a second basket will be available for an additional fee. Cost the workshop, $75.

Sunday will feature a community bike ride to and from the Firth’s blueberry farm in New Sharon. Participants will fill the new baskets (or other containers) with berries. The tour de fruit ride is open to the public; the bike basket class is not a prerequisite. No charge.

Make your own registration form and mail to Koviashuvik, PO Box 383 Temple ME 04984. Please include the name and date of the class, full payment for class (checks made payable to Koviashuvik), name and age of student(s) attending, phone number and address; any food needs or medical issues.  Payment is due two weeks before class begins. Registrations are on a first-come first-serve basis and are considered complete upon receipt of payment. Register early.
Lunch is provided for all classes. All meals are provided during overnight classes. Food is local, in season and organic.

Participants should bring a notepad and pen, water bottle, camera if desired, and a small backpack to carry things. Come prepared for bugs. Bring a bug net and/or light-weight long-sleeved shirt and loose pants. For overnight classes we will provide a detailed packing list. It is a 10-minute walk from the parking area to the school center. If anyone is unable to walk in, contact us ahead of time for a shuttle.
