HARTFORD — Charles E. “Gene” Wheeler Sr., 73, formerly of Auburn, passed away at his sons home in Hartford, June 30. He had been ill since Jan. 2010.

Gene was born in Augusta, June 10, 1938, the son of Fred Wheeler of Bridgewater and Emma Larabee Poulin of Augusta. Gene was educated in Augusta area schools and served his

country in the Marines 1958 to 1962.

He returned to Augusta and worked various jobs and raising his family. He eventually settled at HealthTex, as a floor supervisor, until they closed, then moving to Auburn to work as a custodian at Great Falls School and then Edward Little High School, retiring in 2003.

Gene enjoyed hunting and brook fishing with his son, walking and socializing in the Auburn Mall, spending time watching sports and going to the kids games. At one time, he was involved in bowling leagues and excelled quite well at it.

He is survived by his son Charles (Gene) Wheeler Jr. and his wife Maureen, of Hartford; daughters, Karen Mailhot and her husband, Richard, of Deerfield, N.H., Lynn Lovley of Gardiner

and Debra Haley and her husband, Rick, of Farmingdale; brother, Richard Wheeler and partner, Michael Beloin, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sisters, Dolores Small and husband, Bruce, of Bowdoin, Joan Lavin and husband, John, of South Portland and Celeste Perkins of Dunedin, Fla.; and extended family in Northern Maine.

He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Shirley Woods of Auburn; and half brother, Edgar Wheeler of Bridgewater.

The family would like to thank Dr. Smita Sonti and her nurse Coco for their care and concern, and the wonderful, caring and supportive Rns and HHAs of Androscoggin Home Care

and Hospice and their Supportive Care Staff Kim and Jean.
