RUMFORD — Terry Collins hit a towering two-run home run in the fifth inning and veteran pitcher Levi Brown made it stand up as Bethel walked away with a 4-3 win against Rumford in a Pine Tree League senior baseball game at Hosmer Field.

It was the second straight loss for Rumford, which began the season with four consecutive wins.

Rumford started out on a high note when Justin Staires cracked a two-run homer in the first inning. Ed Paterson previously beat out an infield hit. But the fast start turned south as the 54-year-old Brown settled into a groove.

Brown retired nine of the next 10 batters before the Expos put two runners on with no outs in the fourth inning. Rich Todd walked and Aaron McPhee singled and Steve LaPointe laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Brown struck out Keith Brennick and Bob Russell to end the threat.

Rumford broke through in the sixth, Todd doubled to the gap in right center field and scored when Bethel threw away the ball on LaPointe’s infield hit.

Mark Palmer, who will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame later this month, breezed through the first two innings on the hill for Rumford. But the junk-ball specialist ran into trouble in the third. Collins singled and scored on another single. Bethel then tied the score on a wild pitch.

Rumford had three runners on base in the last two innings but was unable to muster a key hit.
