PORTLAND — The 39th annual MTA Championships will be held July 8-10 at the Waynflete tennis complex. The event is sanctioned as a double major by the Maine Tennis Association.

Competition will be held in men’s open singles and doubles, women’s open singles and doubles as well as in men’s 35-and-over, 45-and-over and 55-and-over singles.

Lifeguarding course

POLAND — Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is offering a Waterfront Lifeguarding Course to be held July 11 to 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This course will take place at the Y’s summer day camp, Camp Connor. Participants must be at least 15 years of age before the end of the course, and complete a skills evaluation on the first day of class, which includes a 550-yard swim.

Upon completion of the course, the lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR certifications are valid for two years. Course fee is $195 for Y members and $235 for non-members. Registration is open, but class size is limited to 10 participants, so register today at the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA 62 Turner Street (next to the County Building) in Auburn. Golf tourney openings

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Franklin Community Health Network’s annual Healthcare Golf Classic will be a two-day, two-tournament event at Sugarloaf Golf Club on July 17 and 18. The beneficiaries will be the Healthy Community Coalition and the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center. Both provide health services to people in need.

Monday’s tournament is a four-person scramble, and anyone is welcome to participate as part of a team or as an individual (individuals who register will be assigned to teams needing members).  

The Healthcare Golf Classic festivities will begin with a noon best ball tournament and reception on Sunday for teams of the tournament’s major sponsors. On Monday, there will be a continental breakfast for all players, followed by 18 holes of tournament play, a luncheon, awards ceremony, and raffle. Both men’s and women’s first place and runner-up low gross and net scores will be awarded.

There are still an assortment of sponsorship opportunities available. FCHN also seeks donations from merchants and others for silent auction items. For additional information, contact Janis Walker at 779-2925.

FORT KENT — The University of Maine at Fort Kent athletic department will host a 5K summer fun run on Saturday, July 30 at the UMFK Sports Center. The race is set for 9 a.m. and is open to all age groups. 

Race-day registration and number pick-up will begin at 8 a.m. The first 50 people to register will receive a race t-shirt. The fee for the race is $20 with proceeds to benefit the Dylan R. Levesque Memorial Scholarship fund.

Racers will compete in four different age groups: Under age 18; 18 through 29; 30 through 44; and 45 and up. Prizes will be awarded to the male and female winner in each age division.

REACH clinic announced

PARIS — REACH will sponsor its second annual Kids’ Baseball and Softball Clinic on Sunday, August 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Gouin Field. Team members from the Oxford Hills Vikings baseball and softball teams will coach players in Grades 2-5 and 6-8.

The clinic will teach hitting, throwing, fielding, teamwork and leadership skills. The fee is $7 (for each additional player from the same family, the fee is $5 per player). Players will also receive a T-shirt and free admission to the benefit softball game at 4 p.m. To sign up, call the REACH office at 743-9777. A registration form and what to bring and wear to the clinic will be provided.

To receive a T-shirt, the deadline for clinic pre-registration is July 25. Right after the clinic, the fifth-Annual REACH Benefit Softball game will be held starting at 4 p.m. Police vs. Firefighters — who will prevail this year? Come cheer on our local heros and enjoy an old fashioned ball game right here at home.

Dirigo hoop camp

DIXFIELD — Dirigo High School boys’ basketball coach Travis Magnusson will run a basketball camp at the school the weeks of July 11-15 and 18-22. Grades 3 through 5 are 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Grades 6 through 9 will attend 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Girls in grades 4 through 9 are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m.
