WEST SUMNER — Preparations are underway for the beginning of the Summer Church Season at the West Sumner Universalist Society, located on Main Street, Route 219, about a half-mile from Pleasant Pond, at the very top of the hill.

The first service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 10, with Rev. Richard Beal officiating, followed by a coffee hour.

The annual bake sale will be on Sunday, July 17, after the morning service. There will be pies, cookies, bread, fudge and other favorite treats.

Marilyn Hammond will open with a service of Universalist Communion at 11 a.m. Aug. 7. The service will contain some historical notes, an occasion for the remembrance of Jesus’ life and teachings.

There will be a christening service held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21. Anyone wishing to have their child or themselves christened should call Pauline Kirschner at 388-2020.

A silent auction will also be held on Aug. 21 to help defray the cost of the badly needed painting of the sanctuary. Anyone having new items to donate can contact Pauline Kirschner at 388-2020.

The Church Restoration Committee, a fundraising arm of the church, is still accepting donations to assist in maintenance. Present extensive plans include raising enough money to paint the interior of the church.

Founded more than 100 years ago, the church has a long, proud history of both a religious institution and also a meeting and gathering place for reunions, birthdays and anniversary celebrations.

A building with such a prominent place in the history of the community needs support to enable its existence for generations to come. All are welcome to attend and participate.

Speakers for the summer season are as follows: July 10, Rev. Richard Beal; July 17, Silver Moore Leeman; July 24, Bernice Martin; July 31, Rev. Robert Sallies; Aug. 7, Marilyn Hammond; Aug. 14, Rev. Howard McMullin; Aug. 21, Rev. Scott Jones; Aug. 28, Rodney Abbott, with organist Beth Chaffee.
