PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — New statistics back up the claim that judges’ salaries in Maine are among the lowest in the nation.

The National Center for State Courts says Maine ranked 47th among states in 2010, paying state judges about $112,000 per year. Experts say that if salaries aren’t competitive, then attorneys would be less likely to consider leaving private practice, where salaries can be far more lucrative.

Former Maine Superior Court Justice Robert Crowley, who now works in private practice, says colleagues tell him “it doesn’t make financial sense” to consider becoming a judge.

The Portland Press Herald says the Maine Legislature has not acted on recommendations over the past four years to increase judicial salaries.
