RUMFORD — Several people were appointed to boards and committees by selectmen on Thursday night.

They were Susan Milligan as animal control officer for another year; Paula Martin and Stephanie Wilson for two three-year terms and William French for a two-year term, all on the Board of Appeals; three year terms each on the Finance Committee for Louanne Cameron, Ted Hotham, and Jeremy Vashaw; and Marie Boudreau to another three-year term on the library Board of Trustees.

Additionally, Eric Giroux was appointed to the Med-Care Ambulance Service Board for three years and Selectman Brad Adley as an alternate; Dan Richard and Ryan Palmer each for three-year terms on the Park and Recreation Committee; Mary LaPointe and Harrison Burns to respective three-year terms on the Rumford-Mexico Sewerage District and Rumford Water District; and for one-year terms, Rick Kent as plumbing inspector, David Errington as his alternate, and Mark Tripp as sealer of weights and measures.

For the Planning Board, selectmen appointed James Thibodeau to another three-year term and gave Kenneth MacFawn the nod for a three-year term, and then balked at filling a three-year Planning Board alternate vacancy with the only other applicant on the list, Candice Casey, much to her dismay.

After appointing MacFawn, a motion was quickly made to re-advertise for the alternate position, prompting Casey to ask board Chairman Greg Buccina if there were more applicants.

Buccina said yes, there were two, although Casey’s name was the only other applicant on the list.

Then, without identifying or discussing why one wasn’t appointed as they did with other applicants during the process, selectmen approved the motion 4-1. Selectman Jeff Sterling was the lone dissenter.

In other business, the board voted 5-0, approving upcoming work to Strathglass Park on the gate entrance and 100 feet of the front wall to York Street.

Phil Blampied of the Strathglass Park Preservation Society said money for the work was raised through private donors.

They will also do some landscaping work at the front gate.

Selectmen also voted 5-0 to convene a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, to discuss extending the wind power moratorium, which expires on July 25.

Town Manager Carlo Puiia said they could only extend the moratorium if they agreed that a problem exists, and then they would have to work to resolve the problem during the moratorium.

Voters have rejected back-to-back wind ordinances during repeated moratoriums. If they do not extend the moratorium to try again, wind developers can push forward with projects.
