LIVERMORE FALLS — A Livermore Falls grandmother who was beaten with a handgun in late June got a surprise dropped off at her house the day after her ordeal.

Dot Bailey, 47, told police on June 27 that she saw two masked men standing in her home and one was pointing a gun at her. She fought them but was hit with the butt of the gun in the head and upper torso. She ended up with nine stitches in her forehead and bumps and bruises. The suspects, she said, ended up with most of the rent money and change she had in a container.

While she was sleeping the following morning a man named “Bill” from Wilton stopped by her place on Pine Ridge Loop. Since she wasn’t awake, he gave $30 to Bailey’s friend, Angela Pomerleau who had brought over dogs and stayed the night with her, The money was for Bailey when she woke up.

He left a message for Bailey.

“He said he ‘wanted you to know that there are still good people out there in the world,’ Pomerleau said during an interview with the Sun Journal.

He wanted to help out, Pomerleau said.

Bailey said she was thankful there are still good people out there.

In the meantime, Livermore Falls police are continuing an investigation into the assault. They have received some good information pertaining to the case, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Thursday.

It’s the height of the vacation season but Barbara Angel found that she had an empty cabin at Angel Cove Cottages in Leeds. She could have tried to find a renter for the cottage but Barbara had a better idea. Why not donate it for a week to an Iraqi veteran who could use a little R & R?

Enter Chuck Starbird and others from the American Legion Post 31 in Auburn. When Barbara contacted them, the folks of the Legion put their heads together. They also got in touch with a colonel at the reserve center on Minot Avenue. The colonel did a little looking around and, what do you know? He found a soldier between his second and third tours in Iraq. The soldier has a wife and three kids and a week on Androscoggin Lake was just the thing.

The family, described as “absolutely fabulous” by Barbara Angel, was settling in this weekend.
