BRUNSWICK — Maine State Music Theatre will present the wacky musical comedy “Xanadu,” playing July 20 to Aug. 6.
The show features the music of Olivia Newton John and the Electric Light Orchestra, and lovingly pokes fun at the 1980 movie of the same name.
In the play, low-spirited Sonny Malone gets a visit from a Greek muse, Clio, who is disguised as an Australian roller girl named Kira. Her goal is to inspire him to open a roller disco. But when Clio falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and Clio risks eternal banishment to the underworld.
Based on the 1980 cult classic film, “Xanadu,” the musical became a surprising Broadway smash hit in 2007. The play received four Tony Award nominations in 2008, including Best Choreography, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and Best Musical.
The score includes hits from the late 1970s and early ’80s such as “Magic,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” and “All Over the World.”
Matinees are at 2 p.m., evening shows at 7:30. For specific dates and availability, call 725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org.
