TURNER — Town Manager Eva Leavitt reminded voters that a referendum will be held at the town office today. Polls will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. Polls will also be open the same hours at the town offices in Greene and Leeds for voting on in the same referendum.
There are two articles on the ballot. One is to purchase a biomass boiler to serve two schools and the other is to purchase a building to house the SAD 52 adult education program.
Approval is sought to issue $600,000 in bonds to build a biomass boiler and related improvements at the site of the Turner Elementary School and the Tripp Middle School on Matthews Way. The boiler would serve the two schools. This project would not be undertaken unless the school district is awarded a Department of Agriculture Grant for approximately $500,000.
The second article seeks $315,000 to finance the acquisition and renovation of the property at 425 Turner Center Road for use by the adult education program. Leavitt said that many of the adult education courses are taught during the school day, making it difficult to schedule them in the existing school building without disrupting regular classes. There has been discussion of moving some School Department offices to the new building if its purchase is approved.
