100 years ago, 1911

The action of the building and Ground Committee of the Lewiston school board in rejecting the lowest bid for building an addition to the Barkerville school and awarding the contract to another bidder, has caused much talk. Unless the matter is adjusted without legal action, sensational developments are expected. The matter will be presented to Mayor Morey and if he is unable to settle it satisfactorily, a petition will be filed for an injunction to restrain Emile Dionne from building the addition.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston-Auburn employment figures took a jump of 700 jobs filled in the period from May to June, according to the Lewiston office of the Maine Employment Security Commission.

Job losses were noted by the textile industry, with gains in shoe shops, contract construction, miscellaneous durable goods and trade activities.

Despite the increasingly better employment picture, the 27,200 employed in June was still 400 below the same month a year ago.

25 years ago, 1986

Three men were arrested and charged with engaging a prostitute early Sunday, as the Lewiston police Selective Enforcement Team cracked down on an area that included Park, Birch, Bates and Spruce streets. The undercover detail used a female officer posing as a prostitute.

Three men and two male juveniles had been apprehended on Saturday evening.
