FARMINGTON — Selectmen will hear a presentation on the installation of Central Maine Power Co.’s smart meters when they meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at the Municipal Building.
Installation in Farmington could begin by late summer or early fall.
According to the CMP website, smart meters are wireless and use a radio frequency band to communicate.
Two benefits of the meters listed on the website are an ability to spot power outages more quickly and that customers may receive more detailed information about their use of electricity.
All CMP customers will receive a standard smart meter unless they opt to retain their existing meter or chose a partially disabled smart meter. According to the CMP website, selecting an alternative other than the standard smart meter involves additional fees, which vary depending on which option is chosen.
The board will also set the town’s tax rate for this year, approve the appointment of a new police officer and award a bid for replacing lighting at the Municipal Building.
