AUBURN — The Auburn/Lewiston YMCA held a board and volunteer social event at Martindale Country Club. Executive Director Brian DuBois thanked the board, volunteers and staff for their contributions throughout the year. He announced membership has grown by 21%. Studies indicate membership growth is attributed to great staff and quality programs.

More than 500 Y volunteers donated time in many capacities from leadership to support to members and child care staff. In the past year, $44,454 in direct program subsidies was distributed to 767 individuals and families. The entire $36,000 raised from the annual fund supported child care services, Camp Connor scholarships and financial assistance for families and individual memberships.

Dubois said, “At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away from life-enhancing YMCA programs. We recognize that for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.”

Tom Anthoine III, board president, reported the YMCA has successfully met the outcomes of their strategic plan. Highlights focused on financial prudence, leadership, membership and staff satisfaction surveys, board development, marketing/fundraising and the site assessment process undertaken for a new capital building project.

Jim Whitmore, owner of four local NAPA retail stores, was thanked for his corporate title sponsorship of the 2010 and 2011 Auburn/Lewiston YMCA/NAPA Golf Tournaments. The 2011 event will be held on Sept. 22 at Martindale Country Club.

Linda Pepitone, the new interim aquatics and safety director, shared her own Y experience and how it turned into her dream job. She said, “I have the greatest job in the world … I can go to work in my bathing suit.”

Three new board members were introduced. They included Mary Lou Magno, Bates College; John Emerson, Emerson Buick and Chevrolet; and Jim Day of Martindale Country Club.
