LIVERMORE — A local woman is starting the dog-days of August without her swimming pool after a mystery driver crashed a car into it and then fled the scene.
Deputy Randy Williams of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said that the crash occurred shortly after midnight Sunday at 668 River Road in Livermore. Homeowner Terry Buck told authorities that she immediately called 911 after hearing the loud crash in her yard.
Williams said that Buck yelled to the the driver through an open window while talking with dispatchers. She said that the female driver — believed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle — yelled back that she was OK.
But by the time Buck hung up the phone and headed outside to the car, Williams said that the driver had fled the scene. Buck and other neighbors reported hearing a truck — possibly a diesel — fleeing the scene shortly after the accident.
Buck didn’t see the driver, but did discover a 2003 Ford Taurus crashed into the side of her above-ground pool. The pool was collapsed and drained by the time authorities arrived.
The driver was nowhere to be found, Williams said, adding that authorities checked area hospitals Sunday for any suspicious injuries that might have been reported overnight.
Williams said that the vehicle is owned by Twin City Taxi, of Biddeford, but information inside the car belonged to Jaime Austin, whose license lists her as living in Biddeford. Williams said that Austin, who recently moved to Jay, reported the vehicle stolen to the Jay Police Department about 11 a.m. Sunday.
Williams said that the crash remains under investigation as authorities try to determine who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
