DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Auburn Exchange Club held a field of honor for our veterans on Memorial Day weekend. Many American flags were sold to the public, but, unfortunately, quite a few were not picked up after the closing ceremony on Monday, May 30.

Anyone who purchased a flag and would like it, please contact me to schedule pickup of your flag. Also, for those who missed the event, there are unsold flags that flew over the field available for sale. All proceeds from flag sales benefit the Exchange Club Youth Fund. Thank you. — Rollie Heckethorn, Auburn, 344-0007, rheckethorn@yahoo.com

ANSWER: Perhaps some people wanted to donate to the cause but didn’t really need another flag. If so, you can sell them again and make even more for the club!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thanks for all your help. I am inquiring to see if you or any of your readers could tell me how to find out about the organization that I could knit hats, afghan squares, etc., to help servicemen and also Indians on reservations. I’ve heard this mentioned but know nothing about it. I knit all the time and enjoy it. I have no computer, but my daughters do, so maybe they could help me. — Nancy, South Paris

ANSWER: Over the years, many different groups of knitters have written to Sun Spots about projects. In 2010, a Rumford reader led a local group knitting for the troops (www.operationgratitude.com), and the website is still up and running, so that is one option.

As for the Native Americans, in March Sun Spots received a letter from Penny and Sonny Thomas, pennythomasandsonny@wildblue.net, 778-6757. They are prolific knitters for that cause.

You might also be interested in the letter that follows yours about knitting to help babies. Other knitters looking for help may write in as well.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Calling all local knitters to Click for Babies: The Period of Purple Crying. Click your knitting needles together to help us prevent infant abuse. We need your help to knit purple (or at least 50 percent purple) caps for a new campaign to increase awareness of the Period of Purple Crying and infant abuse.

The Period of Purple Crying is a time when babies cry more than any other and can be very frustrating for parents. By knitting caps, you will help educate caregivers about normal infant crying, how to cope with crying and the dangers of reacting in frustration by shaking or harming an infant. Knit or crochet as many as you like — from one to 50.

Caps will be collected from now until the end of October and distributed during the month of November to all new babies. For more information, please call 783-3990. — Dori Galgovitch, Advocates for Children, dgalgovitch@advocatesforchildren.net

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have the answer to the July 19 question about Shear Expression closing. After 24 years the owner decided to downsize and moved to a new location, working for herself at Hair Razors, 30 Lisbon Road, Lisbon, 353-6143. The other girls who worked there have moved on to various salons in the area. — Anita Stewart, jeffzors@aol.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again I am asking for your help. I am looking for squirrels that come in the Red Rose Tea collection. Is there anyone out there who has an extra they don’t need? I would pay a reasonable price plus postage.
