PHILLIPS — The Chamber of Commerce will host its 53rd Annual Old Home Days, with one added feature.
Although the standard schedule of events begins Aug. 14, the Phillips Historical Society is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 5. Kaja Veilleux and John Bottero will arrive with their Thomaston Auction Gallery Bus to appraise antiques from 5 to 8 p.m. Veilleux travels the state and New England each summer to similar fundraiser events and has been featured on Bill Green’s Maine and in Architectural Digest.
“We suggest a donation of $5 per item and $20 for five items, and they will also take items on consignment,” society board member Lisa Haines said.
Haines said items will be appraised on a first-come, first-serve basis and suggested everyone could bring their lawn chairs and picnics and take tours of the historical society while they wait. Appraisals can include, but are not limited to, fine art, furniture, porcelain, china, pottery, lamps, oriental rugs, mirrors, books and ephemera, coins and currency, silver, glass, folk art, antique toys, jewelry, quilts and samplers, marine items, sculpture, boats, automobiles and firearms.
People should bring entries for the Amateur Photo Contest to the Phillips Hardware Store on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. until noon. Categories include flowers, wildlife, pets, scenery, people, with one entry per category. For more information, call 491-5431.
The Aug. 19 parade theme is “The Best Things in Life are Free,” and leading the event will be this year’s honored couple, Doug and Judy Eustis Lisherness. Married 43 years, they have lived in Phillips and raised daughters Trisha and Tara and now have several grandchildren.
Judy has worked at Cousineau’s Lumber for 30 years and is a Phillips Historical Society board member. Doug has been a self-employed carpenter. He’s coached the Mt. Abram Lady Roadrunners basketball team for 26 years, bringing home two state championships. Both have been active community members, supporting the Chamber of Commerce and volunteering for Old Home Days events.
“We were really surprised when a few people showed up one night and said we had been chosen,” Doug Lisherness said. “It’s quite an honor.”
