WILTON — The newly paved McCrillis Corner Road was posted by the town Thursday morning, barring loaded vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds from traveling it until further notice.
Trucks going to a destination on the road may contact Town Manager Rhonda Irish for a “letter of no objection,” allowing them to go to the local site, Irish said later Thursday. The letter is to provide permission after a trucker hauling wood from a site on the road called to say he couldn’t travel a posted road.
Concerned about protecting the town’s recent $200,000 investment in the road, Irish and Public Works Foreman John Welch made a recommendation to selectmen Tuesday regarding ways to preserve the pavement, she said. The road tends to get used as a shortcut for some trucks traveling from Route 156 to Route 2.
The board considered amending the Parking and Traffic Ordinance to no-through trucks but concerns about East Wilton businesses and objections from some local truckers were raised.
The need is most crucial during the period immediately after paving to provide time for the road to cure or set up. The road posting until further notice was suggested instead of the ordinance change.
The town ordinance wording will be changed to allow selectmen to vote to post restrictions on the weight of vehicles on town roads, she said.
