AUBURN — A registered sex offender faces years in prison after his videotaped street arrest last week in the alleged beating and choking of his wife and the assault of two teenage boys who came to her rescue at her 114 College St. home.

Shawn Latham, 40, of 94 College St. was charged last week with domestic violence assault and two counts of assault. He appeared Tuesday in Androscoggin County Superior Court where he denied violating the terms of his probation. He was held without bail pending a continued probation hearing scheduled for Aug. 24.

Latham had been on probation from two separate convictions and sentences in two counties.

He was convicted in 2007 on several charges, including gross sexual assault. He was sentenced in Androscoggin County Superior Court to eight years in prison with all but two years suspended. He also was sentenced to four years of probation.

He twice violated the terms of that probation and served about five months in jail for the violations.

In Kennebec County Superior Court, he was convicted last year on a charge of operating under the influence and was sentenced to a year in jail, with all but 40 days suspended, plus two years of probation.

Latham faces possible time behind bars for the suspended portion of his sentences that he didn’t serve in jail or prison for violating his probation.

Law enforcement authorities said Latham violated his probation because he committed domestic violence assault on his wife by beating and trying to strangle her on Aug. 1; assaulted two 14-year-old boys; resisted arrest; was visibly drunk but refused to be tested; and failed to complete sex-offender counseling.

Latham was captured on video by a Sun Journal photographer while grappling with police on College Street in their efforts to subdue and detain him. He is shown being handcuffed and led to a police cruiser.

One of the boys Latham allegedly assaulted told police that Latham had tried to choke him. Dillon Donahue had bruises on his neck, an officer wrote in an affidavit found in court papers.

Another of the teens, Brandon Schidzig, who tried to assist Latham’s wife, Bobby, said Latham hit him on the back of the head with a beer bottle, and showed police a bump there.

Latham was prohibited from having contact with anyone younger than 18 while on probation.
