TOPSHAM, Maine (AP) — Maine’s congressional delegation is criticizing a decision by the Department of Defense to close the Brunswick-Topsham commissary, where thousands of active-duty and retired military personnel go food shopping.
The commissary in Topsham was originally slated to close last March, two months before the Brunswick Naval Air Station shut down for good.
Maine’s congressional delegation said they were told Tuesday that the Defense Department has now decided to close the commissary in October rather than keep it open.
The delegation says the commissary serves more than 10,000 active duty, National Guard and Reserve service members, retirees and their families.
