FARMINGTON — The United Way of the Tri-Valley Area officially kicks off its 2011-12 annual fundraising campaign by inviting community members to volunteer at its new Day of Caring event on Sept. 10.
This inaugural Day of Caring is focusing on opportunities in and around East Wilton, including energy conservation efforts at the Wilson Grange.
United Ways have coordinated Days of Caring throughout the United States for almost 20 years.
“Days of Caring are an important way to give back to the community and to raise awareness about the organizations and initiatives that the United Way supports. The Wilson Grange was the catalyst for this year’s Day of Caring because of its growing impact in the community, including sponsorship of the ever-popular Passport Dinners, creation of a community garden, and upkeep of nearby Bishop Park. Plans to potentially create a Warming Center this winter, and in the long-term be a demonstration site for energy conservation efforts, are key ingredients as well,” said Nancy Teel, United Way of the Tri-Valley Area volunteer center coordinator.
The Grange was the impetus for other opportunities during the Day of Caring.
This year, UWTVA seeks to engage 100 volunteers in projects that meet the United Way’s goals, including energy conservation, emergency services, and promoting health and education. Projects include an energy makeover at the Wilson Grange, cleaning up Bishop Park, working on a community garden, installing Cushing School playground equipment, and maintaining the building and grounds at Safe Voices.
At the Wilson Grange, volunteers will build interior storm window panels, caulk and weather strip, and do some minor renovations and construction to help make the building handicapped accessible.
In Bishop Park in East Wilton, volunteers will help clean and spruce up the grounds and equipment along Wilson Stream across from the East Wilton Grange.
During work in the “Give Peas a Chance” Community Garden, seasoned gardeners and novices alike will join forces to harvest produce for area food pantries, and prepare the garden behind the East Wilton Post Office for next year.
At Cushing School in Wilton, volunteers can join Mt. Blue Regional School District Volunteer Coordinator Pauline Rodrigue and the Farmington Rotary to help spruce up existing playground equipment and install new equipment.
At Safe Voices, a group that provides support for those who have experienced domestic violence, volunteers at the organization’s office on Route 133 will help prepare the grounds and building for expanded opportunities. The building was recently donated to the organization by Franklin Community Health Network.
All volunteers will gather in the late afternoon for a free meal and to celebrate accomplishments. Volunteers should sign up ahead of time by contacting Nancy Teel, [email protected], or visiting the UWTVA website at uwtva.org, or call 778-5048.
