DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was just wondering if I wanted to donate some items to the animal shelter, what does it need most? I live closer to the Lewiston shelter, so it’s easier for me to go there.
I would like to adopt some animals, but sadly my apartment building doesn’t allow pets, which stinks, because my fiance and I love animals. Thank you. — No Name via email
ANSWER: Sun Spots spoke to Zach, the manager at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. Zach said they always need pet food, cat litter, laundry detergent and old towels and blankets.
Volunteers are needed to play with and pet the cats, to walk the dogs and to help with all the tasks that are required to keep the shelter cleaning and running efficiently. Volunteers can also provide foster homes for mother cats and kittens.
You can visit the shelter at 55 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, 783-2311, www.gahumane.org, [email protected]. They are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Open only for intakes on Wednesday on 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Can you please advise where I can get a schedule of antique/classic auto shows with a 30-mile radius for this season? Thank you. — Doug Hayden, Lewiston
ANSWER: Unfortunately, Sun Spots didn’t answer your question in time to tell you about the Uptown Cruizahs car show in Oxford on Sunday, Aug. 7, or the annual event at Taber’s in Auburn Saturday night, but she hopes you found out about them on your own.
As for future shows, a listing of some events is available online at carshownews.com (http://tinyurl.com/3og7vp3). Sun Spots also found some listings at festivals-and-shows.com (http://tinyurl.com/3cn4ogr).
More detailed lists are at www.mainemustang.com and www.portlandmotorclub.com. At blacktoprebels.com it says that there is a display of antique autos every Wednesday at Fast Eddie’s on Route 202 in Winthrop through the end of August. That site also lists events, breaking them down into categories such as cruise-ins and car shows.
Sun Spots noted that your letter was handwritten. If you don’t have access to a computer at home, librarians at the Lewiston Public Library can help you navigate to these websites and print out a list. (There may be a small fee for the printing.)
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I don’t want to give up the Sun Journal, but the U.S. mail is so bad at getting the paper to Texas that all of the news is old except for the comics and Sun Spots. I have gotten as many as nine papers the same day. I like to read the paper day to day.
I will miss Ms. Sun Spots and Mark Trail and looking at the obituaries to see if I’m there or people I know in Maine.
I don’t have a computer (I write letters to people), so I can’t follow you that way.
I go way back with the Sun Journal (I used to get both morning and evening papers) to the days the Sun had two basketball leagues (in the 1940s and ’50s) and some very good teams in South Paris, Wilton, Jay and Livermore Falls. Fred Gage had a newspaper in my hometown of Wilton, and I used to follow the sports.
I will miss it all, but most of all I’m going to miss you, Ms. Sun Spots. Keep up the good work. Your friend. — Al Greenleaf, Keller, Texas
ANSWER: Sun Spots will miss Al, too. He has been a steady reader and letter writer. Unfortunately, Sun Spots cannot do much to solve the extensive difficulties of the U.S. Postal Service.
However, the online e-Edition version could be the answer. Although Al says he’s not a computer kind of guy, Sun Spots suspects his daughter probably is a computer user and might be willing to help him find his way.
The e-Edition is an electronic representation of the way the paper looks in print. This way readers can see how the news is presented in print as well as reading the individual stories by clicking on them.
And it won’t cost much for Al to try it. A month of the e-Edition is $6.95.
