ROXBURY — A lightning strike late Friday night caught a small barn on fire at the end of Horseshoe Valley Road, destroying it, Roxbury fire Chief Raymond Carver said on Saturday afternoon.

“It was a total loss,” Carver said.

There were no injuries and no animals were in the barn when “a significant thunderstorm went over the area,” he said.

Normally, owner Terry Veinot keeps animals in the barn. However, none were inside when the storm rolled through.

Roxbury firefighters responded to the structure fire call at 9:12 p.m. and initially called for tankers from Mexico and Andover as there weren’t any hydrants available. Firefighters from Mexico were then called in to help.

Due to the lack of water, Carver said a shuttle system was set up with the tankers, which used a brook.

Firefighters left the scene at midnight.
