LEWISTON — William F. Steele, 87, of 340 Steele Road, Auburn died Sunday, Aug. 21, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, where he resided for the past month.

He was born in Auburn, Oct. 26, 1923, a son of the late Joseph and Effie Hanson Steele.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was married to the former Ernestine Anna Morris, who died April 27, 1998, after 53 years of marriage.

Mr. Steele was a member of the Danville Union Church and Danville Junction Grange No. 65. He worked at Thurston’s Grain Mill in Danville Junction, Hinman construction, Blue Rock Industries, Maine Turnpike Authority and later for the City of Auburn highway garage.

He enjoyed working on home projects, wood working, traveling, occasional gambling trips, bingo, spending time at his camp and country music concerts. He especially enjoyed listening to the “Gaithers” gospel band.

He is survived by three daughters, Sharyn F. Steele of Auburn, Patsy E. Chan of Rohnert Park, Calif., and Janet Lashua and husband, Michael, of Auburn; his sons, Barry K. Steele of New Haven, Mo., and Scott F. Steele and friend, Debbie, of Hartford; grandchildren, Robin and husband, Marc, Jennifer, Val, Remy, Derek, Mandy, Amy and husband, Carl, Scott and wife, Cassie, Coleen and husband, Tony, Brandon, Kara, Jameson and Danica and husband, Jeff; 10 great-grandchildren, Heather, Chelsey, Seth, Gracie, Ashley, Courtney, Jake, Kelsey, McKinley and Ashton; sisters-in-law, Nadine Browne and Marjorie Steele; and extended family of Marion Tripp.

He was predeceased by his son, William E. Steele; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Steele; son-in-law, Paul Chan; a sister, Josephine Chisholm; brothers, Carl, Lewis and John Steele; and

his loving companion of 12 years, Marion Tripp.

The family wishes to thank staff at d’Youville Pavilion, AHCH, St. Mary’s, Dr. Harder’s office for several years of care and kindness.
